What is Tony's "REAL" name?
Tony's "given" name is Antonio Oliva Lopez Hernandes Javique. In the late 1990's he actually had it legally changed to Tony Pedro Oliva because that is what everybody calls him.
Why does everybody call him "Pedro"?
When Tony first came to the United States to try out for the MN Twins they were going to release him partially because they felt he was too old. He was 21 at the time. One of Tony's friends told the team that the man they knew as "Tony" was in fact "Pedro", Tony's younger brother who was only 18. His friend said that "Pedro" had used "Tony's" passport to get into the U.S. The stories hit the papers shortly after explaining, incorrectly, that Tony was actually the 18 year old Pedro and the name has stuck for over 40 years. Different sources will tell you he was born in 1940 or 1941. Tony was actually born on July 20th, 1938. Tony's younger brother Pedro made his first trip to the U.S. in the summer of 2002.
Where can I send fan mail?
To Tony Oliva c/o The Minnesota Twins 34 Kirby Puckett Place Minneapolis, MN 55415
I sent Tony a fan mail letter and never received a response, why is that?
Tony receives a lot of fan mail. He greatly appreciates the support he has received since 1962 from Twins fans young and old. He reads and responds to as much fan mail as he can, but it is quite time consuming. At any given time he may have 100 or more fan letters waiting to be opened.
Does Tony charge for autographs?
Tony has signed thousands of free autographs over the years. When he meets a fan out on the town, or even at the ballpark, he hardly ever says "no" if they want him to sign something for them. He doesn't ask for money before he will sign an autograph. However, there are times when he attends card shows or other events that require payment for autographs. Also, due to the overwhelming amount of mail he receives from collectors Tony does not sign autographs via mail. We are currently working on a fair way to charge for autographs obtained through the mail and/or this web site.
